In the CTE Spotlight

Meet Gerardo.   He is a senior at Del Norte High School and when he graduates this spring will have completed Biomedical Sciences, Human Body Systems, and Medical Intervention making him a Health Science Pathway Completer.

What Part of CTE courses have you enjoyed the most?
I definitely loved the real world application of what we learn in class; whether it be through some unique labs that we do or guest speakers that come and talk to us about their industry.

How has the program influenced your career goals or helped you in college decisions?
I was already interested in science and medicine but taking the CTE classes just solidified and confirmed my interest.   I now know for sure that I want to do medicine.  My Medical Intervention Teacher, Mrs. Craig, introduced me to an internship in a hospital setting, which I am currently in which further confirmed my interests.

What is one piece of advice you would give a student taking these classes?
Ask questions and be involved. You can take so much away from class thus being more involved is beneficial.  Like, for example, we learned about diabetes in PBS and when I did my shadowing internship in a hospital, a majority of the patients had diabetes.  I was able to ask the doctors a lot about diabetes, which impressed them!

Whom would you recommend to the Health Science Pathway?
Anyone who has any interest at all in the field.  For those who want to study medicine or work in a lab or if you are just interested in science in general.
