PUSD Black History Month Celebrations and Events
In addition to focusing lessons and assignments on Black History during the month of February, sites will be holding unique and engaging Black History Month celebrations and events. A few of these are showcased below. Site webpages will be updated with specific Black History Month activities.
Adobe Bluffs Elementary:The February Sing Assembly will focus on Black History Month and will include a performance by their Westview High Ambassadors.
Deer Canyon Elementary: Daily morning announcements during the month of February will include messages about Famous Black Americans
Pomerado Elementary: January 28 - A staff meeting will be hosted for all staff interested in having a deeper discussion about BHM and finding ways to challenge our students. It will be an opportunity to talk and discuss ways that students could be involved in taking ideas one step further to positively impact the future.
Rolling Hills Elementary: February Morning Messages will include Words of Wisdom passages that align with Black History Month and various articles and links will be included in the weekly community message to foster "at home" learning.
Sunset Hills Elementary: Students will spend the month of February creating a project (poem, song, piece of art, poster) around the theme "Black History Month Means to Me..." This project is at the suggestion of one of our SHES students, and she will introduce the project to the student body via the Monday Morning message at the beginning of the month. Students' work will be showcased in a culminating video that will be featured on SHES social media sites, as well as in the weekly SHES family communication.
Meadowbrook Middle: Art classes will be covering Black Artists and Poets in class. Teachers will be introducing black artists such as Augusta Savage, Maya Angelou and Kara Walker, to help expand student knowledge of culture in the art world. The hope is to connect it all back to art themed around the BLM movement and draw a connection to their lives now.
Del Norte High: ASB will host No Place for Hate activities and host a representation Rush to highlight and publicize the various racial and ethnic clubs we have on campus. The DNHS ASB will also develop Instagram pushes on diversity throughout the month and will look to educate our student body by presenting info graphics on what micro-aggressions are and their impacts.
Mt. Carmel High: ASB and Club Council will lead a BHM Instagram campaign through each of the clubs that they sponsor.
District wide: Library Techs have created Virtual Libraries for teachers and students to use as resources in the classroom and home.
