Substitute Teacher Employment Application and Information
Thank you for your interest in the Poway Unified School District. The district is committed to preparing students to be college and career-ready. As a substitute teacher, you will join a team of educators dedicated to providing our students with a rigorous learning environment every day.Interested applicants must follow the steps as outlined below:
1. You'll need a Teaching Credential or 30-day Emergency Permit: To apply for your 30-day Emergency Sub Permit or Teaching Credential please click the following links. Credential information, 30-Day Emergency Permit Checklist, and 30-Day Emergency Permit information. SDCOE locations are listed below. Currently, PUSD is accepting applications from candidates who possess one of the following credentials: Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, Single Subject Teaching Credential, Education Specialist Credential, or Counseling Credential.

2. Complete fingerprint requirements. Fingerprinting - If you are applying for a California Credential or 30-Day Emergency Permit for the first time, you must do the DUAL fingerprinting process (41-LS). These fingerprints are also referred to as a Certificate of Clearance. See the link for more information on the NEW requirements for fingerprinting.
Go to SDCOE Fingerprinting then click the tab towards the bottom of the page 'Requirements for Fingerprinting'. If you are a retired teacher returning as a substitute, fingerprinting may be required. Contact the Substitute Assignment Desk for more information.

- DOJ Clearing House Fingerprints (DOJ FORM), (needed for certificated employment with PUSD.)
3. To submit an online Substitute Teacher application please click the link: PUSD Substitute Teacher 2024-2025 Application.
All required documents listed below must be attached to your application in Edjoin, please do not send your attachments to my email.
- Resume
- Three signed letters of recommendation dated within the past three years.
- Unofficial copies of your transcripts
- CBEST test results (This is not a required attachment in your application but, if you have your results, please include them.)
- TB Results/X-ray Results (Risk assessments are not accepted for first-time employees)
TB Certification
Per the Education Code, all employees must provide proof of being checked and found free of active tuberculosis before beginning employment. Please provide evidence of a negative test within the last 4 years. A copy of the test results is sufficient. Teachers who are Retired STRS members will need to complete Certification from Contagious or Infectious Disease (I-30).
PUSD Retiree
If you are a Retired PUSD certificated teacher wanting to return to PUSD after your 180-day waiting period, please email Melissa Mann at, [email protected] to get the PUSD Retiree Substitute Teacher packet.
Application Process
The Substitute Desk will review applications regularly. Applicants selected for employment will receive communication from the Substitute Desk. Due to the high volume of applications received, Poway Unified School District requests that you do not contact the Human Resources office regarding the status of your application. Applications will be carefully reviewed and those with the most appropriate education, experience, and training will be contacted to continue the process. If it is determined that you will not move forward, you will receive a regret email. Melissa Mann is notified each time an applicant has applied.
