(San Diego, CA) – The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) is proud to announce that Alyssa Roscoe, Elementary Teacher at Midland Elementary School; and Christopher “Chris” Koreerat, Extensive Needs Support Teacher at Bernardo Heights Middle School; Carissa Jones-Fletcher, Physical Education Teacher at Poway High School have been named the 2025 PUSD Teachers of the Year. These outstanding educators exemplify PUSD’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and student support. Their names will be forwarded to the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) for consideration in the countywide Teacher of the Year recognition program.
Carissa Jones-Fletcher, Physical Education Teacher at Poway High School
With 12 years of teaching experience, including 10 years in PUSD, Carissa Jones-Fletcher has redefined physical education by focusing on inclusion, relationships, and student growth. As a champion of Unified Sports, she has created a welcoming environment where students with and without disabilities compete together, fostering a school culture of belonging and teamwork.
Jones-Fletcher played a key role in launching Poway High School’s first-ever Unified Sports Soccer Tournament, securing community sponsorships, and involving students from multiple disciplines to promote inclusivity beyond the gym.
Whether coaching basketball, teaching freshman P.E., or mentoring student-athletes, she instills confidence, perseverance, and a love for movement in her students. Her leadership has expanded Unified Sports across the district, making Poway High a model for inclusion. As the Special Olympics liaison, she continues to advocate for opportunities that allow every student to experience the joy of sports, proving that athletics can unite a school community in powerful ways.
Christopher “Chris” Koreerat, Extensive Needs Support Teacher at Bernardo Heights Middle School
An inspirational educator of 11 years, Christopher Koreerat is passionate about making education engaging, accessible, and relevant for all students. At Bernardo Heights Middle School, he brings learning to life through hands-on experiments, inquiry-based learning, and real-world applications that spark curiosity in his students. Koreerat is recognized for his commitment to equity and adaptability, ensuring that students from all backgrounds feel encouraged and empowered to explore.
Christopher also brings staff together in a manner that is richly student-centered and empowering. His belief that teaching isn’t just about academics- it’s about preparing students for life, helping them to develop emotional intelligence and resilience, reminds us of the true power of an engaging classroom. His impact extends beyond the classroom through the Best Buddies Program. The program is full of many life-changing moments for students to form friendships and transform school culture. Through his dedication to interactive and inclusive education, Koreerat continues to inspire the next generation of compassionate innovators.
Alyssa Roscoe, Elementary Teacher at Midland Elementary SchoolA dedicated kindergarten teacher, Alyssa Roscoe has spent her career of 14 years fostering a love of learning in her students while building a foundation for academic and social success. She is known for her student-centered teaching style, which encourages curiosity, creativity, and engagement in the classroom. Roscoe's teaching philosophy centers around creating a safe and inclusive space where students are encouraged to explore, create, and learn without the fear of making mistakes. Her classroom is a vibrant hub of activity, where hands-on learning and technology are seamlessly integrated to support each child's unique developmental journey.
Roscoe's innovative approach is exemplified by her use of life-size number bonds to solve story problems, and technology tools to support language development and creativity. Beyond the classroom, Roscoe is deeply committed to connecting her students with the wider community. She initiates annual projects that address community issues like pollution, wildfires, and illness. Roscoe also collaborates with parents to bring real-world expertise into the classroom, inviting professionals to share their knowledge and experiences with her students. Her efforts to bridge the gap between classroom learning and community involvement have not only enriched her students' educational experience but also instilled in them the importance of contributing to society.
