The Poway Unified School District (PUSD) is proud to announce that Jason Schafer, Counselor at Black Mountain Middle School, has been named the 2025 San Diego County Middle School Counselor of the Year by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE). Jason received a surprise visit at his school site today and was recognized by his colleagues, family members, and PUSD leadership in front of students and staff. He also each received a $500 check from sponsor North Island Credit Union.
Jason Schafer has been a counselor at Black Mountain Middle School for more than 10 years. His dedication to the students and his work is unmatched, and many colleagues refer to him as the “heart of the school.” His nomination reads in part: “He actively listens to students, families and staff in need of support and always makes sure that everyone he comes into contact with feels heard. He is a calm presence on our campus that our students and staff could not live without!”
Jason is also the Career Technical Education (CTE) Lead on campus and uses this role to develop unique, career-minded experiences that engage all Black Mountain students, such as the community supported Career Fair. He uses tools and student feedback to ensure that students are receiving the best support possible and have the options to explore what interests them most.
The School Counselor of the Year (SCOY) program recognizes and celebrates the work and service of professional school counselors in San Diego County. Winners are selected based on qualifications such as advocacy for the profession, impact and support for diverse students, leadership and collaboration, and professional development.
