an Outreach specialist hello everyone I'm Madeline Hindi and I am an Outreach specialist at Kellyville and so say I'm going to be sharing with you information about Colleyville is a financial program for the disability community so we here at Cal able believe that everyone with a disability should know about Kelly people so sure you're wondering what is Kelli maple the able part of Kellyville stands for achieving a better life experience a science have trouble hearing you oh okay try again can you say something yes hello it is already hooked up with some System supposed to be goes through the whole thing again the better okay let me see if I make this a little bit louder yeah I can try to change my microphone to can you try that okay okay so are we good yes Madeline perfect so I'll start so basically you be able part of a label stands for achieving a better life experience and this is part of the able act which is a federal law that was signed in 2014 that basically a naval states to open tax advantage savings and investment programs that are really designed to help people with disabilities achieve their financial dreams and soak a label is California's version of the blocks and our program started in 2018 and really the best thing about these savings accounts is that with Kellyville people can save money without impacting their eligibility for means-tested benefits SSI Section 8 housing help medical labs this is really a great opportunity for people to save money without impacting the benefits they need and then the money in his account could be used for qualified disability expenses is education transportation and I'm going to cover qualified to split expenses in. Later in the presentation and so why do we need tell Abel so you're aware it's really no secret that living with a disability can be very expensive people with disabilities might have extra cost for things like medical treatment accessible housing adaptive equipment assistive care and any more thing is that somebody without a disability would not need and sofa many people living with disabilities finances can be a huge burden and financial stability can be hard to achieve in fact the Nash disability Institute she was one of our partners found an adult living with a disability has to spend 29% more of their income to attain the same quality of life as someone without a disability in many cases this percentage can act sleepy much higher and so that is where callable comes in and so as you might be aware if you're on SSI you can't have more than $2,000 in a bank account otherwise you may be at risk of your benefit and soap with a Kelly blackout you can actually save up to $100,000 directly and a Kelly book account and it will not impact SSI benefit on on the money of these accounts can really be used improve quality of life while also pursuing your goals the opening a Cali look how can be a life-changing experience so honestly I had just a few facts about how label SoCal ableism answered by the state of California and shared by the state treasurer so I actually work with the state treasurer's office I'm so we are State program and then tell Abel the community currently has more than 125 dollars in assets under management and more than 10,000 people have trusted people with their savings and Investments and So currently the callable program is open to any his disability began before age 26 and I'm going to dig into eligibility requirements in just a second but one thing that we're really looking forward to is starting in 2026 that age limit is actually going to go up to age 46 this is through the air Dustin act and so we're really excited about this because that means that stole many more people are going to be eligible for these really important account but right now our eligibility is limited to if you have a disability that began before age 26 we are really proud of these numbers $10 more than 10,000 people have trusted us with their savings and investment there are so many people who are eligible for Kelly blackouts that don't know about them or just have an open there's yet and so that's really why I'm here sharing the word just to show that these accounts are available and are a resource to people with disabilities and so in this presentation I'm going to be covering some of our tough question first I'm really going to be covering who is eligible much of the eligibility look like how much can you save and what can you spend your money on how do I open an account personal favorite question which is how do I maximize my account able accounts there are few ways to do that and then the last question will cover is wide shoes Kellyville and also talk a little bit about Special Needs Trust and affection the first who is eligible to open a callable accounts felt like I mentioned to be eligible for Cal table you do have to have a disability that begin before age 26 this doesn't mean that you have to be below the age of 26 you can actually be any age and open a callable account it's just that the likely onset of your disability has to happen before age 26 this also that mean that you have to have been diagnosed before is 26 it's just that life Leon set so what example we like to use is autism and so you could have been diagnosed with autism later in life but you always have. somebody with autism to be able to open a callable account no matter what their ages and then if you meet the eligibility criteria for disability benefits like SSI or SSDI I add your disability began before age 26 you would be automatically eligible to open account payable account now that doesn't mean that you have to be on SSI or SSDI you can still open account a block out as long as your disability is on the SS list of compassion losses for the Blue Book listing of security disability and so we go by Social Security and so if you're not on benefits we do recommend that you receive a signed letter from a qualified physician to basically just says that your disability began before age 26 this does not have to be the doctor that diagnosed you specially If you're diagnosed later in life this is basically just a call that position that says the likely onset of your disability was prior to age 26 and then for everyone who opens account payable account you'll just have to confirm that your disability to get before age 26 it really is a sissy based on your word and then you don't need to turn that letter into Cal label the side letter from a qualified physician we just recommend that you keep it in your records just in case Social Security were to ask if you wanted to go side effects or potentially if the IRS never seen that happen but we do want people just to be prepared just in case hey it's not going into the second question how much can I but with a cow label count the annual contribution cap for 2024 is $18,000 into this is contributions from all sources so this could be coming from the count owners income you could also come from friends and family could come from Grant that is from all sources and that is capped at $18,000 in 2024 this limit is based on the IRS gift tax exemption limit so it can change from time to time last year it was 17,000 and so we're really excited in 2024 that it went up to 18000 another for those who are on Social Security SSI benefits the total amount that you can have in your account while still protecting the sun if it is $100,000 and said that is both contributions an any earnings or inter UK on the account I'm so if you're on SSI you'll just want to be aware that you can only have up to $100,000 in your account once you start to exceed that the access cable began to count against your benefits your resource limit able to also let you know when you're beginning to approach that limit if you are on SSI and you want to protect your benefits I thought you would probably what it take some of that money out but which I will be talking about in just a second and then for those who aren't worried about protecting SSI you're not on SSI the total amount of contribution limit for a tally book How is 529000 and so at that point once your account hits $529,000 you wouldn't be able to contribute any more money into it but the account could still continue to grow and then Kelly will automatically reject contributions that you don't need to worry about going over that $18,000 and will contribution cop or the 529 I just remember if you're on SSI and you want to protect those that have it you can have $200,000 in your account and so throughout this presentation of sprinkled and a few quotes from March how evil ambassadors these are real life account holders who can really show you how are using their cow and so Valerie she said I'm using my Kelley Book how by every month putting $50 in my account that in four or five years when my service off retires I'll have enough money for travel and expenses when I go get my that's her dog Valerie is a great example of somebody who is regularly contributing to her account and she really does have that savings goal in mind and then there are some people who actually can contribute above that $80,000 annual contribution cap through able to work and so with able to work people who are working and are not contributing to an employer base retirement plan. Calendar year they can actually contribute from their income and additional 14580 and so this is really great so the $18,000 I can come from any source that can come from they have owners income friends and family. So the thing beat 14580 that does have to come from the account owners in come specifically and so actually three able to work somebody who is working could contribute a potential total of 32580 in 2024 this is a really great way for new people who are working maybe they're only working part-time and they are eligible for retirement employer-based retirement plan this is a way for people to save additional monies really a great opportunity so question number 3 what can I sell my money on play one of our most frequently asked questions and so people can spend their money on qualified disability expenses and so the definition of a qualified disability spuds is basically any expense that helps the account holder maintain or improve their health their independence or their quality of life and so that is the definition of qualified disability expense I know it is what it is meant to be that way so that people can really spend the funds in their tally book on anything that helps them live their best lives and so on this slide I have some example had a glorious of what would be considered qualified disability expenses this list is extensive by any means but it's really just to help get you thinking about what you would want to send the money in your account on and so for sample education expenses this could be tuition this could be book school supplies it could be technology like a laptop so you really got to think creatively housing would be a qualified disability so rents mortgage payment utilities say the one thing with housing if you're on SSI you do have to take the money out of the Kelley Book account and then spend it on that housing expense within the same calendar month that is play for housing expenses and SSI for other things are not limited to taking it out and spending it with in the same month but for housing and a size specifically you are you just to take it out and spend it listen get a little have you think so I just wanted to point that out and then Transportation would be qualified disability expense so you know if you wanted to buy a part for the down payment on that car or even like the Uber and Lyft those be qualified acidic Jason says assistive technology and training health and wellness even vacations to be considered a qualified disability expense really when you're thinking about you is this a qualified disability expense just go back to that definition does this improve my health my Independence or my quality of life and then that would be a qualified disability expense and cow table does not ask you to let us know what you're spending your money on but we do recommend that you keep a record just in case you are on benefit Social Security could potentially ask or potentially the god we've never seen that happen but we do just want you to be aware that there is a possibility because these are tax-advantaged accounts here is a another quote from Cheryl she is a table at she's an author legal representative for her two sons she said Kellyville enables me to provide tools for my children to help them better communicate and relate to the world we use funds to pay for the horseback riding therapy music there he an art therapy so I really like this example because Cheryl is just showing how she's really thinking creatively about how to use the funds in the account and how she can really improve her son's Independence and quality of life and for them. Really is with horseback riding music and arts the number for how do you open an account so just a few things that you should know before you open an account so participants can only have one able accounts I mentioned at the beginning of the presentation that the able act enabled States Open Seas of able accounts and so there are a bunch of different able programs across the country now the really great thing about how evil counts is that we are open nationally and so if you open a table child and then you move out of California you could still if your cat able account but the thing is you can't have a kind of accountant that also have enabled in another state you would have to roll over and we do always recommend that people look at their home States able program first because I may be additional benefits provided to in state resident like for example in California we've actually passed a law that protects cow label account with California owners from medical recovery Medical clawback that phone protection. Colleyville offers California residents with my account and then some other things you should be aware of is that the person with the disability is all what is the able account owner and beneficiary the fun I'm so even if the account is opened by somebody else who would be an authorized legal representative the funds in the county will count always belong to the person with a disability so this is different from something like special trust her. Kind of thing where the fun don't directly belong to the person with disabilities Kellyville counts really offer an opportunity for people to save and have money in their own name which is really great and so who can be an authorized legal representative and so basically the authorized legal representative is the person who would be opening a Telltale account on the person with disabilities be half and they would also be the one who manages the they have the username and password they make the decisions on the account and so an account can be opened by an authorized representative or it could also be open by the person with the disability if they feel comfortable handling their own money thought the person is under 18 they would have to have an authorized legal representative or if they would just rather have somebody else manage the funds that is fine as well and so is his legal representative can beat someone with power attorney it can be a legal guardian or conservator of spouse or parents a sibling a grandparents even a representative payee can also be an authorized representative anyone request by the account owner and send the case where somebody is under 18 they would have to have an authorized legal representative and usually in that case it ends up being the parents do you like the grandparents as well you know try to help with family finances and so to open account payable account you do go to our website which is Cal label. Ca.gov we are a completely online program so unfortunately we don't have a physical office location where you could go and open the account and it does have to be all done online but we do try to make that process easy as possible so go to our website and then you can see there's an open an account but you would click there and then the whole process takes about 20 to 30 minutes would you try to make it as easy as possible there is a video on our YouTube channel called tips for opening a account payable account that goes through the whole process so if you're curious. Might be definitely something to check out and then we also have a customer service number at which I'll put on the screen towards the end of the presentation who you can contact if you have any questions and then the website is also just a great resource if you have any additional questions about the table and you can see there information on how it works eligibility benefits some of the investment options we also do have frequently asked questions on the couch able website so it really is a great resource check out okay and number 5 how do I maximize my account is like I said this is my favorite question to go over and really there are three ways to maximize your accounts so you can save money and tell people you can grow your money and then you can also spend your money at any time and so I already mentioned the it'll contribution limit for 2024 is $18,000 but how do you get your money into your account so the easiest way is probably to link a bank account and do electronic transfers back and forth so you can do. To take you got to take money out for coffee disability check that you can set up recurring contributions to really a set-it-and-forget-it situation you can also set up direct deposit of Social Security I'm an even payroll contributions from work and then you can also mail a check to Kellyville our mailing address is in Pennsylvania so Pittsburgh so if you're yelling at a senior hey why is the California California program it's just our administrator who they are located on and then another really great way to make sure you're maximizing your safety is to ask family and friends to contribute to your account with gifting you can set up a gifting and you're Colleyville portal and then this creates a link that you can send out to family and friends through email or on social media and then anyone who has your gifting like and contribute towards your goal fantastic thing about these gift contribution is that they do not count as income and so for Social Security let's say your friends and family want to help you with rent they can actually it directly to the Kellyville account they wanted to help supplement with rent and this will not count as income for the purposes of social security so they won't reduce how much money you got contributions go directly into your account payable account this is a really fantastic opportunity for friends and family to you know it gives you some money without impacting your benefit so we definitely recommend that people you know set up a Gibson when they open their account is there is a another quote from one of our cats evil Masters Hector and the he said my birthday I asked this is my able account you can make a donation and it ended up getting enough money to put down a down payment for two bedroom two bathroom mobile home and so I love tractor story he has a short YouTube video on our YouTube channel where he does share his story himself so I definitely recommend checking it out but I do love his story because he was on benefits and then he was working and yeah enough money that he wasn't eligible for benefits anymore but then due to unfortunate circumstances he actually ended up becoming homeless for a little bit and so with a cow table account it was through a gifting it was really a way for him to save up that money and she was able to put down a down payment on a mobile home. He really has that security and so it's just such an inspiring story. recommend checking it out on our YouTube channel okay another really great way to maximize your cable account is to invest your money and so with Kelly Bullock the money actually grows tax-free and can be taken out at any time without taxes or penalties or those qualified disability expenses similar to like a Roth IRA you don't have to wait until you reach a certain retirement age to take that money out so Kellyville is really a fantastic opportunity to build wealth through those compound earnings and now we do not able that from many p you might be the First Time Saver you may not have any familiarity with investing and so we do try to make investing as easy as possible we provide eight different portfolios that used to and put your money in to see you're not selecting like the individual stocks and bonds on your basically putting money in CDs mutual funds and so the FDIC insured portfolio that is most similar to like a savings account it's not tied to the investment Marketplace at all so it's a really great option if you're planning on using accountable account for more than day-to-day expenses and you need to make sure that your money will always will be there ASAP in portfolio is a great option the other seven different Investment Portfolio those are weighted by risk and so it goes from the least risky at the top and down to the most risky and so rest so short it is basically the potential that you lose money but also the potential that you earned money so the more risk the greater the risk that you is money full so the their potential to earn money and so as you can see with the income portfolio that is one of the least risky really that's I see and sure that's at least risky but I'm going to be about the income portfolio that is mostly it's a money market Securities and then you can see that as the purple ears go up and risk the ratio of stocks increases and so I Kelly will we can't give investment advice but we can give you some things to think about so like I mentioned one of the things to think about is how you're actually using your account so like I said if you're using the account from work day-to-day expenses bill that's what you need to make sure that your money is there and not going up and down with the marketplace that's Jason Tripoli can be a great option if you're saving more long-term you can actually do any of these investment portfolios you could do a mix you go put some money in the income portfolio I put some money in the portfolio the only thing is you can only change those investment place for calendar year when you put money and you can always select a new portfolio if you wanted to. But if you wanted to take money from the and then put it into the growth portfolio you can only do that twice per calendar year and then another thing to think about is your own personal risk tolerance and so you know some people there taking really long time to like yeah I'm definitely okay with you know sing the money go up and down it's a Marketplace and how that's doing and so they might be more comfortable with something a little bit risky or some people are not okay and that is perfectly okay and so they might want to consider doing something a little bit less risky it's really just thinking about what your own goals are and what your own risk tolerance says I'm so here's another quote from Angelina she's an authorized legal representative for her son Tyler she said having a table count will help Tyler finally save money for all his medical and living expenses while also teaching him how to plan term for his career in future just as you and I are able to do the Cali whole program opens the door to life possibilities for Tyler and so I like this example because it really shows how Tyler and Angelina are thinking about both Tyler's short term the medical and living expenses but also his long-term expenses and then they're probably you know thinking about those and then picking their Investment Portfolio is based on what Tyler's goals are in life okay so now I do want to talk about these I want to be transparent and there are these types of these accounts we do try to keep the fees as low as possible we do have them just for the cost of maintaining the program and so this example right here assumes that somebody has $3,000 in their County able account and so with all Kelly able count there is animal account maintenance fee of $30 per year. Is taken out on a quarterly basis so it'd be $7.50 per quarter and so this is one that doesn't matter if you money in that 1500 or if you have money and several investment portfolios it's just one $30 fee for having a Kelly book account and then if you had all of your money in after I see a shirt for polio all of that $3,000 in there you would have a state of ministrator fee this is a percentage-based fee so it is wait to 8% and so percent of 3000 is $8.40 so the state of ministrator fee will change depending on how much money you have in your account thing with the FDIC insured portfolio is that we've designed it so that the interest that you gained on that will outweigh that's a Ministry to feed outweigh the account maintenance fee but it should outweigh the same industry to be so we do recommend another people can you deposit money and just because we do have these fees and then for the investment portfolios so there is also that state administrative fee and then there are some underlying investment fees will be arranged because depend on which of the seven portfolios you have your money in there right down here the percentages but these for having $3,000 in your account these would range from $0.92 to $2.23 and then there's also a program management fee again at the percentage so that would be $3 if you had three thousand innocent. That's in your account and just a reminder that these how do you grow tax-free and somebody can be taken out at any time without taxes or penalties for those qualified disability expenses here really is that the interest that outweigh these fees I'm so we definitely you don't recommend continuously contributing money into these accounts that you don't see the fees take out all your money I'm in the ECB interest tax-free growth okay send out more of the fun part is actually spending the money it's like I meant send you can send the money in your account on call disability expenses which are anyting improved Health Independence our quality of life and so it's actually get the money out like I mentioned you can link a bank account and chronically transfer money bank account you can also have a check be written to yourself or the third party really one of the easiest ways to ask somebody in your child will count is with the prepaid card and so with a prepaid card this is a reloadable debit card that is not directly linked to the table account so basically you take money from the colourful account and then you go in and you load it onto this card that's not directly linked can you use the card to pay for qualified disability expenses anywhere that Visa debit cards are accepted the one exception is you cannot go to the ATM and get cash so that's why that should exist there another really great thing about the card is that you customize your spending you can set with your card will and won't work to avoid fraud you can track your spending and upload receipts you don't have to but it is just as well that is available to you and then also have two separate cards so one for the beneficiary and one for the authorized legal representative so this is a really great way for somebody who's maybe a first time learning how to budget they can actually still have a car and have some money loaded onto an each month but they won't have access to all the money in the account so they're learning how to budget and you know they still need to kind of figure out how much they can spend four in there this is a really great option for people because they won't have access to all the money in the account but they'll still be able to spend their money and practice spending such a really great option and then there are no monthly fees with the card there may be some fees like a replacement card for international transactions but there's no monthly fee for having the card and then there's no fee for using the card either don't know the last question shoes how able you know as opposed to something like a regular bank account or Special Needs Trust the here I did want to talk about how evil forces Special Needs Trust And so a lot of the times we get question which is better a callable count or a Special Needs Trust and really the answer is that neither one is better they can actually work really really well together and so we have YouTube video on our YouTube channel about people versus Special Needs Trust so if you really have detailed questions I recommend checking that out first usually try to give this webinar once a year as well and so you could be on the lookout for but this is just a short example of a comparison chart and so it's something to think about startup is that with the table account you can open the account by yourself online in 20 minutes or less I'm generally but the Special Needs Trust you need to work with an attorney to create and so I can take a bit more time so if you're looking for something you know right away you could start with tele blood count and then still continue to work towards that Special Needs Trust with ownership and control with a cat a book how the individual with a disability is the owner and they or the authorized legal representative can manage and spend the money with a Special Needs Trust a trustee actually manages the craft and has sole discretion over spending what the Kelley Book count for purchases there's really that broad range of allowable uses including food and housing with a Special Needs Trust it really depends on how trust is written so there is also a broad range of allowable uses but depending on how the trust has written you may not be able to use it for food or housing but that's really something you would need to discuss with an attorney for the cost for the Kelly book how it's free open and the Beast start at just $30 a year and then some of the investment choices have additional fees with a special needs trust that cost has been a very but because you do have to work with an attorney It generally is a bit more expensive the contribution limits to the county of account anyone can contribute to the account but deposits are going to be limited that $18,000 annual contribution event with a Special Needs Trust there's no deposit limits but can she those are limited so they cannot include the beneficiary and so this is where you know sometimes people will receive an inheritance or a lump sum of money and this is where Special Needs Trust would probably be better because what the Kelley Blue you are limited so that you can talk dollars per year Medi-Cal pay back so I mentioned briefly medical will not seek to recover from a California resident with a cow table account with Special Needs Trust only first-party trust me medical some of the different investment options so how evil has options that I covered in the account owner really chooses how to invest and then with a Special Needs Trust there also and options available earnings are going to be taxed is that it does have tax withdrawal for qualified expenses I'm into this is just a brief comparison of how people and Special Needs Trust did you work really well together so it's not really an either-or situation it's a yes and and so now I'm going to go over just a summary of some of the details of why choose Kellyville set out like I mentioned how people really empowers people disabilities to save and plan for the future of you are in the driver's seat with accountable account you can save money while still protecting those benefits that you need the money in a callable account is also protected from medical recovery friends and family can contribute to your account through gifting without impacting benefits you can also grow money tax free spend that money at any Out and then if you are just loving how evil you want to spread the word as much as possible we do have a partner okay what you can access which can help you for the word accountable account and then lastly very last thing I want to cover is the disclosure statement I'm not going to read this whole thing but tell people is an investment program like I mentioned and so there is that risk that you could lose money and so we definitely recommend taking a look at the disclosure statement and reading it for opening account payable account so you can know risks involved but also so you can know the benefits of a kill Abel account the disclosure document has all the information you could ever need to know about Cal table so if you have any you want a deep dive into the investment so you learn more about getting money out of the account definitely take a look at the Disclosure document or you know you can always give us a call as well if you don't want to sort through this whole thing thank you I definitely appreciate your time and I have time for questions a mutt Lange looks like we have two questions submitted online and she went to okay okay so I see first question is there any way to move the money out of his account in the future if you choose also what are the options for money and accountable account that is unused so that is a great question I did Cover the options for taking the money out for qualified disability expenses the one saying so if you decide to just take the money out you know you just want to close the account and take all the money out there may be some taxes involved on the earnings there is that but you could always take the money out you know and use it for non-qualified expenses there just might be some taxes and penalties but it is your money so you can use it for those non-qualified what does just be aware that they're there will be those taxes what are the options for money into account that is unused and so this might be talking about you know what happens when the beneficiary passes away and so at that point the money in the account it can be used for any qualified disability expenses like funeral or burial and the outstanding expenses and then I thought points the executor of the estate with cement Aid that the beneficiary form to count the count would be Frozen and then be exactly there would be able to take that money out however the Estates handled it but there would be some of those taxes and penalties the one option would be if the account owner has an evil eligible sibling step-sibling or half-siblings that person could be actually set up as a successor beneficiary but it does have to be a sibling so not there isn't always what's the first person said my son is in kindergarten. So basically I will be managing all is there a minimum age requirement to apply some know is there is not minimum requirements you can open the account since your son is under 18 do you would be managing the account for him if he decided. he's ready to take over the account he certainly could you just have to submit a form to Kellyville but he if he if he's not ready at the perfectly fine and you can still come speak out for him let's see you should the deposit the money be deposited to the account after-tax yes so this the money that is deposited into the account will be after-tax money accountable account is most similar to I'd say look in a Roth IRA where that is that after tax money and then it has the opportunity to grow tax-free unfortunately right now in California if we don't have any like text it's for contributing to Kellyville count some states actually do you have that option when you do get some tax benefits potentially in the future if some of the laws in California or change that could be an option but right now it's not can I transfer funds from a Google account in a different state to count able so yes you could do a roll over from an able account in a different state to Kellyville there's a form on our website for rollovers and so at so like I said you can only have one able account so you can briefly have to if you're doing a rollover cuz he would need to open a Kelly book how and then roll the money into Cal table and then you would close the other account that is definitely an option and there aren't any like taxes are penalties to do a roll when did Sunshine is that you also can do rollovers from a 529 College Savings Plan the one thing with that is you will be limited to the $18,000 per year if you wanted to roll over money from a college saving shoe and able accounts see what happens if the beneficiary decides to move out of California so I briefly mentioned that Kellyville is a national program so you can actually live in State an open account if you moved out of California you would still be able to keep your counsel account another one saying is you might want to look at the state that you go to to just see if there's any in state benefits for in-state residents and then you could consider rolling over a year Kelly bookhounds not state but you don't have to because Telly blizz open nationally let's see can we use the money to buy something internationally State traveling for a vacation International fine just remember with a prepaid card the international transaction fee there that you'll want to look into that you could definitely use the money to travel for vacation basically as long as improved help independent or quality of life it is a qualified disability son another one thing is you wouldn't be able to like pay for the whole family with the Kelley Blue count but if the Christmas disability if they need a person then they can pay for that for like their own plane ticket or for their hotel room but they want to be able to pay for like the whole family to go to Disneyland on the account but I will say that this gets a little bit more and still qualify disability you have a whole webinar on. But the money in the account it doesn't just have to be for the sole benefit of the account owner so what example we like to use is one of our ambassadors she is a man Stitches the authorized representative for her son and so her son and he is 10 years old so he actually outgrew his wheelchair and so with their health insurance play the fight for very long time to get him that bigger wheelchair but when they finally got it they found out that it didn't fit in their car and so they actually used money in the Kelley Book how to help them purchase a bigger car for his wheelchair and so of course you know her son he can't do it is in the mom's name and other family can use the car what's her son does benefit having that car around so is a qualified disability expense that they could use the money in the account for okay next question if you put aside money are you expected to keep the sound below 2000 so no not so even if you are a direct depositing Social Security money directly into the account you can hop up to $100,000 India without impacting as a dye Bianca is one of the really great things okay does a type of account require medical certification on a regular basis for the disability status and no no it does not so be just recommend that you received that letter from a qualified physician that says that your disability began before age 26 but you don't need to turn into Cali bowl and so we don't hire a medical certification on a regular basis. These accounts do I have to fund the account opening or can I set it up while the SSI is in progress we'll have a little bit of times actually fund the account so doesn't need to happen right away but after a few months the account would be temporarily closed you could just call us we can reopen it but we do recommend you know they be putting money and we need to open the account so you don't forget about it c-can parents successor designated beneficiaries if the account holder is deceased or does the account closed down so great question so a successor beneficiaries and only be a sibling step-sibling or half sibling so parent would not be able to be exposed to certain designated beneficiary beneficiary it does have to be able eligible as well they also have to have a disability at the begun 4-H 26 and so when the account owner does pass away and there's not a successor been a designated beneficiary and place the executor of the states would submit a form to Colleyville let them know and then they would be able to take the funds out there would be those taxes and penalties you know because it's not broke but the money could be directed however the estate is managed okay can you rollover funds from 529 College Savings Plan of a non-disabled sibling to a cow or a disabled The Bling That is a great question I don't know the answer off the top of my head I would have to go and actually check out the rollover form just to see exactly how that works but that may be a good question for you to call our customer service center about they're the ones who actually deal with all the account management so I'm sure they would know better than me can the recipient use the family members credit card to purchase items or expenses and claim the amount later some sort of asking if if you could pay somebody back for a while but I'm assuming is sort of what the question is and so you could yes we do we do recommend that you just you know keep a record of what the expenses for so that it's not just you know out there so you could put you know. You took his money out she used to pay for some types of them back for closets abilities but can I submit receipts later on and let the money grow now so you don't actually have to submit receipts we just recommend that you keep a record just in case you are on Social Security SSI or potentially that if you were out of it but of course I've never seen anybody else but I R Us but like I said these are tax advantage account so they essentially could asked but you don't need to submit receipts to call Abel so you could certainly just let the money grow is the beneficiary able to own real estate purchase a table and still maintain SSI eligibility great question so that might be a question more for Social Security not sure off the top of my head how Social Security would be you oh. That might be a social security question what if the disabled person needs someone to look after them 24/7 the person could be someone you higher or a parent in this case can account be used to pay for caregiver expenses during travel ticket so that is a great great Somebody To You know go on vacation like you and I like you and I would be able to do you know they might need a caregiver to actually be able to do that and so a caregiver expenses with we be qualified stability fences are in my blank now would you be able to use their for the fat chance would you be able to answer the question individual since you're going to stay on Zoom right I do have other speakers to present about the self-determination program you wanted to save some time for them of course of course thank you so much okay I'm so sorry just one more question from that you a sodding yeah the question is have a Special Needs Trust what the benefit of having how about count as a Special Needs Trust at the same time so usually take money from the Special Needs Trust and put it into the Kelley Book count for that more like flexible spending and then also yeah basically there's a prepaid card so can it really and you know the person with the disability if they said they have the option direct how they're spending the money so I can be a really great way to for somebody to gain a little bit more independent and then also friends and family can contribute directly to the accounts result in any like deduction in SSI that is a great option there. They work really well together thanks for my queen all right so what next we going to have Susie Wingate and Angie Robinson to prison. the self-determination program all right I'm sure all of you are exhausted but we'll try to make this quick and leave some time for questions we just want to give you an overview on self-determination and the program is available if your child is a regional center hello my name is Angie Robinson I see some familiar faces here thank you all for coming today and if we want to present I was very important and what actually has helped my son I'm a former pass PUSD parent and determination has really made an impact in my son's life or his life after transition and I think with my colleagues help we've been able to set up a wonderful plan for Giancarlo and I want to share with everybody that great opportunity for each I'm an independent facilitator but my reason why I got into this is because of my son who is 5 years old now I've been a special teacher for 18 years and I ended up having to take a leave of absence for my son was 13 months old and got diagnosed with a very rare genetic deficiency which led to me his primary care provider and then I started this nonprofit to help support individuals once I learned everything that was available because it's a lot and I was like I don't know how parents can do this alone and so I wanted to be that resource for them and then some of you know my why is I have 3 but John Carlos my oldest special needs child he was born blind and on the autism spectrum so I have I'm independent facilitator really made it super easy to navigate the dry to process I know if you try to do it by yourself it can be very confusing as there is some challenges so with the help of my independent it really high she dyed my hair has grabbed my hand and she helped me navigate this dreaded dreaded opportunity program for everybody that has a special child so self-determination allows the individual to have control of their life and it is looks like the cable has a problem so we could August cannot see the chef going we're going to latch together laptops sharing I'm so sorry about that I'm supposed to go down here and then we are on the stove now we can start all right so we'll tell you when that show they should be able to share now open something so that's for the online audience and pads for because she's sharing so we can control that nice working okay sorry if that's okay okay good see your cute kids just south of termination is a are you with the client has control over their life they get to decide their hopes and dreams and they don't have others deciding for them it's about Ben being in charge which gives them into and having their voice heard Define principle of self-determination so freedom of Thor t support response confirmation same as what I just said it's just giving them the ability to have the freedom to choose what they want to do with their life okay so right now if your child is a Regional Center clients there Underwood's child traditional Services Services your supports and services are decided based on your ipt team which is your service coordinator and you know a parent and maybe other family members that may be involved there's limited types of services that you can receive because they have to be vendor I saw this and so you cannot shoes services within your community that may not be tenderized and so you have to stick with what's available through the regional center and so you're limited it's not as and so sometimes traditional Services works or a client to a certain point and then self-determination may become more appropriate and sometimes if you're not maximizing what you're post to be receiving such additional Services than self-determination would be more appropriate so south of termination program gives the freedom control responsibility you use your budget purchase services and goods from qualified service providers and individuals or businesses and they do not have to be Bend erised but you can use been dry Services as well so you can have a combination which is very nice of you and your IP I'm saying you meaning the client just so you all know you and your ittt and develop your budget and spending plan that you arranged and you people to help you so they get to choose who their circle of support is that's going to help them throughout this process it's a control thing I do occasionally self-determination so these are some questions that came up and so some such a relation is a regional center provided program each individual is a part of the regional center if you get into self-determination you're still a regional center clients it doesn't remove you from Grease mother anyone that is a regional center client no matter their age can enroll into self-determination a lot of will think that this is for transition age kids are adults any age can enroll into self-determination and sends Regional Center is the pair of Last Resort we always have to tap into the generic resources first so think of school-aged students they have to tap into what the school district's provide Insurance provides and so we have to look at all those other services first before we use Regional Center funding and then hire budgets are for clients who have graduated from high school and or those that have aged out of their transition program at 22 years old and so oh sorry just one quick thing on their younger school-age kids do have smaller budgets when you ate out that means that there's a change in circumstance there's a newly identified needs now which means that you receive more funding and so I like to share that because I think everyone goes into this thinking oh can I just get money for this this unless and that's not how it works and so I just want to make that clear so here are the steps so in order to transition I break it down into these steps and I tell all my clients like I told Angie is that we go one step at a time and if she would ask about the budget before we did the person Center plant I wouldn't answer them and I like to break it down very simply you have to take an orange first as the parents or even the clients can be involved in this orientation to understand what cells termination is then you have to do a person Center plan then you get to the individual once you have the budget then you create your spending plan and then you have to obtain a financial management service and update the science I pee pee and then they can transition each slide from here is going to go over each step so the orientation if you go into the San Diego Regional Center website you're going to find a link that is under the services Tab and it's titled self-determination and you click on that link and if you click on that link right there on the screen I'm it'll take you to I don't know if we can see it it may not be worth messing with the technology so anyway that's fine that's totally fine if you go to that link you're going to see a tad they actually did a nice job and cleaning up their website to make it more accessible and easier to get to and so you click on the orientation and there is one part of the orientation or it's like self-paced and then you have to do this part where it's a zoom with regional center sdt specialist and so there's two parts the orientation and once you have your certificate then you can begin in to self starting self determination process I got that so you don't remember who you did it with one thing I said is contact the coordinator and see if there's anything they can do if not they may require you to go through their orientation and so that may be what you have to do okay September 1st at Center plan so you done the orientation now you are working on your person Center plan the person Center plan is a process of learning how the individual wants to live their life about their strength Cassidy Chang Asian activities to promote community life and give them choices involving family friends and professionals as they desire or require and the pcti outlines the goal that will be used in ITT the individualized program plan which is the regional center document so when working with Angie on John Carlos PCP we had like family we had past teachers we had the high school teacher people that really knew my son and you how he work best and what help them succeed as our kids are different with us as parents Bennett School right so for me it was very important to make sure that I had his teachers his AIDS people that knew exactly how he's driving in different sections of his life and it really made a difference with having the PCP they're having Giancarlo like I said my son's blah but having him here all the support that was gathered together for him really made motivated him and having everybody pitch in on ideas of how he drives and what works for him and what he likes him fighting the entry giving him the opportunity to partake in such next text big step in his life was really really amazing for him yeah you should the visual CCT looks different some individuals have large groups and in person and some it's just dependent on the clock that's a preference some some clients get overwhelmed with too many people and they may want it to just be at you like a parent and made it Independence facilitator that is helping there's no wrong way of doing it it's the preference of the client and so we need to support that and acknowledge that this is their plan and their choice sorry for those on the other side I'm trying to push I can't Wednesday think of it like and i t t e r i t g n them at any time and then you also have input from other people involved in this right so apparently has the client may say you know I want to be a doctor and it may say okay or the input of Solitaire may say okay let's look at the requirements of what it takes to become a doctor and go through that process with that client to maybe see what could you do in the medical field that would be at your ability and more appropriate for you and guiding the client that way the individual budget so basically how the individual budget is determined the Regional Center reviews the expenditures over the past now that's not what the budget is going to be people get hung up on I haven't used any of the money and so now they're going to have a budget that $0 and then what's the point of getting into self-determination but then we talked about newly identified needs changes in circumstances and unmet needs I talked about that a little bit earlier but maybe some unmet needs happened during covid and they're still running now finding service providers and support is very challenging we know there's a lot of weight lesson things like that so there's a lot of unmet needs out there that we can justify and it will help increase the budget and so when you have that meeting and an independent facilitator I highly suggest having an independent facilitator there with you to be able to talk through this and then once you worked on the budget together and everyone agrees then that is the lump sum of money that then can take you to do the spending plan so when we were leading up to the individual budget for Giancarlo the night before and she is texting me back and forth frantically like all like nervous and anxious and I was just replying back with it's going to be okay I'm down you know all these things and she's like what supposed to just trust you and I said yes but that was it yes you are supposed to just trust me and so so why did you have these feeling I had these feelings as every other special needs out there you know where else were you so used to advocating for our children and having to jump hoops and having to take no for an answer or like being in control right we like to be in control of what's going to be your bride child so when she's helping me in it's just giving me bite-sized pieces of information as I'm going in that I said I want to know what is it going to look like give me a parameter like tell me what it is and she wouldn't budge as it got now I understand why she did they would have been way too much too whelming for me and I did I had to let go of the control and learn to trust and it is very hard but that's why I say and I can't read her enough how important it is to have a good independent Wasilla Tater if you are choosing to go the song combination route because she's on your corner she's on your side you know especially sheet with her background in special education and she knows the ins and out it was very easy for me to transition and yes learn to trust a person that likes to be in control too so I understood where she was coming from as you can see what this presentation I want to be in control and I have limited so yeah the process can be overwhelming and that's why I don't want to overwhelm families anymore than they already are and so that's why I choose to do it that way different facilitators do different things but that's how I choose to do it and it works out mostly from yes so now we have the individual budget we had this want some of money that were using and now we get to create a spending plan so the spending plan is fun because it's now what we going to allocate this money to okay where is it going and so over the next 12 months where is this money going so we have to remember some things when were putting together spending plans that they do have to align with the goals that we outlined in the PCP and those will also become outcomes in the ITT kind of ties together in the end but it's very where is that having these goals and outcomes to justify why we're spending the money okay so Department of Developmental Services DDS oversees this entire program and so basically they could go to the regional center and say why is so and so buying this or why are they getting this as long as we can justify it with an outcome or goal then we should be fine yes there are stipulations just like with the callable presentation about certain things that you can't buy with your self determination money I don't want to get into the nitty-gritty of what's that is I like to have this conversation when we're working on the a spending plan together I actually tell the family to list everything I say even if it's over the budget amount just listed all out and then we talk through each item and work through it so you're going to have an amendment to that ittt towards the end of transitioning into salsa termination so it's his very last step of the process so you're going to do the ipt right now current do the PCP and then and then you'll just amend the ITT really amending will just be updating the outcomes which I called goals so you can not spend oh I have a question for you for the spending plan total amount of individual budget so if your individual budget is $40,000 you can spend $40,000 or less you cannot go over I had a family the other day will come you just ask for more money now we can't you know there may be some things that do have to come out of pocket and we talk through each thing and prioritize what's most important so this is just one example in this is John Carlos outcome or goal because the services and supports that are paid for out of your spending plan needs real 8 like I said the ITT go John wants to be assured that he can navigate safely in the community so there's things in his spending plan that he can purchase an order navigate safely within his community so when orientation and Mobility instructor a pronto an Uber card on his white cane or getting around in the community those are things that he can purchase in his spending plan to help achieve that goal and so this is what it looks like when we're putting it into a spending plan so we have the service which is the orientation and Mobility instructor we have the IP bitt goal that aligns with we have the unit cost or that person and then we calculate you know some Services of different is hourly monthly flat rate like there's all different ways but this for the sake this was an hourly rate of 10 hours a month and for 12 months instructor for the year is going to be $18,000 and so if you want to go to the next slide you know I Andy when we were starting to work on the spending plan she goes how are we going to spend this money I said believe me you will trust me again and so I provided him with this s*** this sheet the service codes and budget categories for self-determination so how did this help you in the process and helped me a lot when I was a lump sum and I said how am I going to distribute this how am I going to spend it because we have but I don't really have an idea of the services that they get at school and how much that can cost but then she actually helped me think outside the box when she presented me with this list because Giancarlo didn't need a good orientation mobility and one of the things that I like about this is having the budget be flexible where you can hire whoever you want at whatever price you want to pay them whatever the amount is you get to pick and choose who do you want to work with your child how long and really pay them well right cuz the orientation and Mobility especially for my son it's big this is who's going to teach my son how to be safe on the streets how to get in and out of you know MTS service and coming and teach him Independent Living skills so I know that a lot of my budget was going to go to this person but I have a bond with her already so I like I want to make sure that I get the best for my son and with having the budget I can allow that is distributed how I want rage personal assistant help me to really help think outside the box of the things that he needed it's kind of hard to do from there I apologize but will read great okay okay you can zoom out and go back this is Giancarlo spending plan and it just gives examples and we'll talk you through it so you if you can't see it it gives you examples of what we're spending the money on I have it right here and he's so you can see it from here what is extra small as well so I swear we were prepared so his services and support in his spending plan everyone's looks different so he had the option he has the ability to pay for things like his YMCA gym membership his therapeutic horseback riding his music therapy and Taekwondo and my ongoing services to support throughout this process through the entire year and what are some other things that you use the one of the biggest things for me wasn't I think for most of us parents is the one-on-one with their child is personal care assistant right so it's no longer called a caregiver now as he's transitioning he's 23 he feels I can see his body language so I was able to hire her at a very good rate and now he feels like oh I don't have a caregiver I don't need help she's my personal assistant that comes with me everywhere and so we changed on that and he started so that give me an opportunity to hire who I want it at the price you know give her a good decent amount of money to be able to be with my child at all times so she's with me 5 hours 30 hours a week so she's averaging 5 hours a day Elite taekwondo Master Kim who's in for his Ranch amazing he's a special needs dad himself he gets it he's teaching every disability a possible sheet his studio is open for that and of course they're pricey right so I was able to allow some of the Rodger to go there he goes twice twice a week music class the Music Center Academy great he's able to get two classes a week there as well as here in sin locally in Poway Lakeside Windsor Ranch amazing therapeutic horseback riding twice a week it's cost costly so I can allow some of that budget to go over and pay for the services for Giancarlo Independent Living skills I have a his teacher that work with him in high school by Rancho Bernardo High I was able to hire her and be on the budget so that she can teach my son I'm going Independent Living skills and again he's a people that have worked with John Carlos do the past so they know him well so it's give me the Liberty to be able to hire whoever I want it instead of hiring somebody from a from a vendor or somebody you know they give you a list of you know Maxim Healthcare or whatever is out there you need to build the Repertory need to build the Beverly these are people that have already been with me for years so it gave me a piece of Mind specially this next step in Life or Giancarlo one thing because callable presented and I wanted to mention I'm in Giancarlo spending plan there isn't reminder for the special-needs planning Institute because that's appropriate for him at this time and so that can cost a lot of money and it's a one-time you so I told Angie if you put it in now next year that money can be allocated to something else right and so it's just getting creative and thinking outside the box which were used to doing for a kiddos question in the audience. Oh yeah always acting like my oldest one even though we can still start this I really want outside of the question is this mom has an 11 year old son who wants to receive outside speech and OT Services Beyond because he's non-verbal the unfortunate circumstance with that is that he's a school-age kid oh right and so Regional Center will not Fun For Speech o t t t any of that stuff and they won't approve it in a spending plan either he ages out and now he's out of well system then you can use that money towards speech o t t t any of that now you can you can at any age you can yes I can help further Services we do get creative for certain Services you know when I talk to families they a lot of them shooters for their kids right to help them academics and stuff and when I talk to them I'm like are they just working on academics are they also working on other skills let's talk about all the seals they're working on him to be it will be which is perfectly fine as much as I do I do so a lot of school-age kids I'll tell you what's an ER budget they have respite money they have soap money they have a conference fee money and then if we're talking about behavior and some sometimes there is exceptions to certain things to put it on the client you can allocate let's say you're not using arrested provider M and you want to chew someone could be a family member is a camp okay so now is after we sprayed that the spending plan you have to obtain a financial management service this is the only vendor I service that you have to use throughout this process so the financial management service is essentially who's paying for all of these services that are outlined in the spending plan and so if you go on to the DDS website under self-determination you'll be able to find a link for a f a message and you'll be able to see it's broken up into region as he would click on San Diego and see what's available for SMS is an SMS is not going to even entertain a client until you have a budget and a draft spending plan no sense in reaching out to an SMS and say I'm starting my my child PCP do you have availability there's no sense in it okay I do a lot of people have come to me we can't you know I'm so you have to go through the stuff they don't want you to get nervous about that the message and so we work through that together and guided people to the ones that I know that definitely work the best how is your experience been the mess has been fantastic I know in the past a lot of horror stories are ugly never pay on time or they don't they're never able to speak to me directly I contact my fmx email I call and she picks up so it's a great we are on a first-name it's really good that came out of the child's budget to pay for them and it's no longer The Regionals cheese for them and so it's not an item line in the spending. So how it works near the certified budget we have the proof spending plan and then we've established enough Ms and now people can start getting paid I'm trying to say so we can get the questions by PTI discussed really the most important part is just make sure that those outcomes Alliance of what you're purchasing in your spending plan Ellington so independent assault a termite Services my services are free of charge to you as a family the regional center pays for my services to be able to help you get on boarded your your child get on boarded into self-determination and then if you choose to keep me on then I can become an item line in the spending plan to help with ongoing support there's things that come up through the year there's budget adjustments there's a change in spending plan there's all different things that come up throughout the year and if you don't have an ongoing support then you're going to have to work on that with your coordinator on your own and then this is just a little video but I don't think we're going to click on this site don't know if we can utilize in all of his self-determination funds for his social rack I know the video here and so basically it shows you showcases him and his Taekwondo him and his horseback riding him and his him with his Independent Living skills an instructor who teaches him him with his personal assistant so it kind of gives you a glass of what his day looks like after transition and one thing I do want to touch on his you do once you get your independent facilitator you do want to make sure you keep her on the at least for a year is all have picture brain I mean I'm in the process I'm in we're using our our our our our our our spending plan at but there's just questions as you go and I could not again imagine doing it by myself for trying to call Regional or call her she'll be able to eat direct me the way and it comes out of your budget and it's still worth it so you know most people keep me on transit now my first client into your three already and they still keep me on because DDS always comes out with new directives for the program and why do you guys need to keep up on those directives you know I mean like letting me be responsible to tell you if the directive so changed or there's anything that needs to be adjusted and stuff like that so that's the importance of a facilitator there's two sylla taters out there there's list on the regional Centers website to find facilitate I'm not the only one out there and there's a list of people who just provide person Center plans so be careful with that because you will go to them for a person centered planning they can't help you the rest so you want to make sure when you're asking about what they can provide can you provide the PCP support with the budget support with the spending plan support with I can you do all of Madeline you know if they just say they can just provide the PCP I highly suggest going to someone that can do it all I inherit a lot of cases that have just the PCP and it's a challenge for me because I didn't write you know and so I write it and so you know I work with it and that's fine but it's just helpful for me to learn about the client when I can work with them through the eye of the PCP and I think that's it and we can open it up for questions on this nonprofit that I Garden is actually with Molly Molly is an individual with cerebral palsy and she entered into self-determination five years ago when it was the pilot program and so she hired me through her spending plan as a consultant to help start this nonprofit and so it was really cool and Somali is part of our team and she's not able to be here today but if you ever see us presenting anywhere else in Molly's there it's nice to hear directly from the source who's living in you can go to the next life so question brother questions from the right now and then we'll go to the ones better celebrate great questions so does Regional Center the question or the audience at home does the regional center push back on someone transitioning to self-determination they don't actually the San Diego Regional Center has done the best at transitioning clients in the self-determination and they've transitions the most in fact they have opened a self-determination Department that just specializes in South termination now and Sue wants a client transitions in the self-determination they then get transition to a self-determination coordinator so your coordinators which I have yet to have any use with working with the regional center on this process and he remind me of your second part of the question why would someone not take advantage of traditional Services of self-determination and stay insured call services so I just have this conversation last week with another potential client and we decided to keep her daughter in self-determined in traditional Services she's 13 years old and she's maximizing everything that the regional centers off right so rested she's maximizing all the hours and has a provider she's utilizing all the social wreck so I went through all the things that I know she would get in the budget and she's using it all through vendor services and so really at the end of the day it wasn't appropriate right now for her to transition because it would just be switching it to self-determination and paying the same as IP for the same exact things are currently doing so be a lot of work right however when her child becomes 18 or 22 and changes in circumstances and now we want to hire some people that we are people with and now they have more hours at home and what are we going to do with all those hours that will become more of an appropriate time to transition to self-determination it depends on if you're maximizing your service is under traditional Services okay if you're not getting the mats out of what they can provide and you don't have vendors and you don't have these things in place then it would be taking a school-age kid and putting them into self-determination questions from the chat okay so a spending plan budget a spending plan in ITT all has to be done on or before the 15th of the previous month to have a start date on the first of the next month so Princeton April 15th this month if my clients are trying to transition in on May 1st they have to have all of this documentation to the SMS and then they'll be able to transition by May 1st allows for you know the other half of the month for the SMS to start onboarding people getting paperwork done so that hopefully there's a March 1st May 31st May 1st and so you know as long as people are completing their paperwork you have to remember the SMS is a bank there is going to be paperwork for each person you're hiring each service that your new child is receiving do you have to make sure that you're staying on top of the people that are going to provide these services and make sure they're completing her paperwork and get it in on time next question I'm not sure why is your so there are some services and spiders that won't take third-party payment meaning of a mess pay and so you have to ask your provider's if they will accept payment from an SMS and if they say no unfortunately there he is no way of putting them on a spending plan and getting them paid you can see if the camp can be paid for upfront and if they feel more comfortable with that and if they can have one-time payment up front before the Camp starts they may be more willing to do it but yes you do have to talk with each provider to make sure they're fine with receiving money from an SMS what is the best age to start self-determination yeah so like I said before it any age can transition if you maximizing all that you would gets for self-determination under traditional Services then you just want to stay with traditional Services until you feel like okay we're not getting anything out of this time to go over to self-determination emanation budget roll over from year to year it does not roll over so you have its annual so that's another reason to keep an independent facilitator on so each year you have to go and have a budget meeting and then you have to create a new spending plan and then you know so it just every year but it does not roll over so you want to try to use as much of the funds as possible if we are currently receiving respite services wear still eligible for self-determination I heard from a social worker we apply for self-determination we will lose our respite services it's true provider is not willing to take payment from a SMS and so most of the respite providers especially if it's been derise and I'm assuming it is cuz you're using it through the traditional Services most of them are willing to pay self-determination clients so you will not lose your respite services for good one we're just getting started with cell determination sdrc how will I know if self-determination is a better option for us. you can email me and ask me and I can go through and just have a quick conversation with you to see what you're currently receiving and if there's anything that maybe you would benefit more from and self-determine and I'm I'm honest and truthful like I'm not trying to push self-determination because like I said traditional Services may be appropriate at certain times of each individual's life weather report of this presentation be shared with remote attendees yes all the presentation today is going to be uploaded to the PUSD special education website under parent bastarz and it's going to be under parent resources and agendas I'm another question about SMS and then paying you no providers each SMS has their own payments time frame and so mostly it's like every other week or they pay biweekly and so they'll have you have to submit your invoices by this date in order to get paid by the following week I'm going to be miss that you're on the next pay time you know so you just to make sure that your vendors or your service providers are aware of what the pay schedule is so that they can make sure that they get their invoices in on time know an SMS to ride B Bender Eyes by the Regional Center it's the only vendor I serviced that you have to use through the Regional Center in so if you go to the lake I said the DDS website you'll click on self-determination and SMS and milk San Diego and you'll see the list of vendor ifms has that you can choose from you can't just have anyone be your SMS you can't pick any one I'm sorry go ahead Pacific Sea and then go off on her own yeah so she can so that's one thing I didn't touch on so if you're hiring someone outside of an agency and they do not have their own business there is what's called an employer burden okay and employer burden means that they're being employed by the fms-2 the SMS is now the employer of this individual and so there is a percentage taken out for that individual to work mostly about 25% so if you think about it it's like if you're hiring someone for $30 an hour it's really going to be about $37 an hour for that person okay so it just depends I'll have to see what their budget is the burden there's ways that you can work around a burden to you but at the same time you know you just have to see what the budget is and what you're going to be used and that's important so if you're going to use the tow employer model you have to make sure the SMS offers that not all SMS is provide Bill payer Co employer model yes I know they give you a set amount of hours with border that could still be the same you do not have to stick with the allotted amount of hours for respite that Regional Center gift so let play Regional Center gives you 75 hours quarterly right okay so and you're only going to use what's a 50 hours right now you're not going to use the full amount then can you use the remainder of that money for other services that you can place it somewhere else yes this is your lump sum of money don't think of it in each category how are we dispersing ask you to move it yeah so let's say there is $8,000 a lot of two respite you don't have to use the full $8,000 for breast it but you could use that you could use half of that and take the other half and put it towards other services if a client transition to self-determination can they take back oh yeah so you can go back to traditional services if you're not satisfied with all the termination but you have to remain in traditional services for a full year in order to be able to go back into self-determination if that's not working I have yet to have a client leave selfish Nation once they transitioned but yes you have the option to a question here real fast they're employed by the SMS to the SMS how do you choose them and so they you know are responsible therapist employed SMS is now the employer I'll talk to you after because it's already receiving Max and rest of the time we increased number of hours under sets you know if Regional Center a lots a certain number of hours of rest B you know you can always ask for them to do a respite assessment to see if you know I always make sure that the coordinator is do a an assessment before a budget meeting just to see if hours increase and then if they don't increase then you can take money from another category to increase your let's say we put in for a social rack for music therapy but we're not going to use the music therapy we're just going to use that money towards respite yeah yeah you can you have more than one recipe Ryder in a spending plan yes you can can SMS pay directly to family member or friend who provides respite services yes so a family member can be a provider parents can be a provider for adult science a parent cannot be a provider for children okay and so but yes you can have more than one respite provider and you can hire a family member of friend and a parent can be in a budget once their child is an adult you can be in the budget you could be in the budget for a variety of categories Community integration for transportation for Community Living skills like a variety of areas you can be a provider in and I think this is the last one will we still be eligible for a medical waiver yes you still are eligible for all the other services that the regional center provides under the traditional server also if you receive copay assist or you're in the VIP program the paid internship program that remains under traditional services that does not roll into sdp so if you get copay assist.
