Scott Corso, Principal
I am humbled and honored to serve as the principal of Black Mountain Middle School. I was born and raised in Northern California. While there, I attended Santa Clara University, majored in history, and received my Masters in Education Administration from National University. I served in education for over 20 years. During that time, I taught 7th and 8th grade humanities, high school social science, English, and video production. I have also been an Athletic and ASB Director. Before coming to Team Poway, I served the community of Temecula as an assistant principal at Temecula Valley High School.
The best thing I have ever done is marry an amazing southern California girl. My wife Jennifer and I have four children. Jacob and Jessica are grown and on their own, while our two youngest, Dominic and Dante, are students in the Poway Unified School District. In our spare time, we enjoy the beach, sports, hiking, and traveling. I also enjoy officiating high school football. Coincidentally, I am a big sports fan, all Bay Area. Go Giants, 49ers, Warriors and GO RAIDERS
Jo Ann Cooper, Vice Principal
I was born and raised in a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA and earned my B.S. in Microbiology from Pennsylvania State University. [Cooper] I've lived in San Diego since 1996 and am the very proud mother of three adult sons. I truly appreciated the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom for twelve years before returning to school to earn my teaching credential from Cal State University - San Marcos in 2000 when my youngest son was in 1st grade.
In 2009 I completed requirements for my Masters' Degree in Educational Leadership as well as my Administrative Credential also at CSUSM. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching 6-8th grade math classes at Twin Peaks Middle School from 2000-2012, and was extremely honored and thrilled to be selected as a Poway Unified School District Teacher of the Year for 2011-12.
I love to watch all sports - especially football, baseball, soccer and lacrosse. My favorite teams are the Penquins, Steelers, Pirates and the Nittany Lions! I love the beach, coffee, chocolate and pennies, and enjoy doing yoga, riding my bike, crocheting and reading.

Education has been in my blood for generations. I come from a long line of educators, and I am excited to join the Black Mountain Middle School team! I earned my B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in human anatomy and physiology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo years ago… I won’t say how many! While finding my way toward education, I held a variety of eclectic jobs before becoming a teacher. I worked with dolphins doing marine mammal research, dissected a human cadaver as part of a research project, was a D.J. on the radio, and taught surf & snorkel camps with Scripps Institution of Oceanography. When I decided to get my teaching credential, I had no idea how much I would love it!
For the last 16 years I have been teaching biology at R. Roger Rowe School. I enjoyed being both the science and math chair as well as serving as the Student Government Advisor for our school, where we focused on social and emotional health for our students. I earned my Masters in Educational Administration, and have spent years working with teachers and families to ensure each child’s school experience is as successful as possible. I enjoy getting to know kids, their families and finding areas where I can help.
I am a mother of two children myself, one awesome 13 year old son (yes - I also have a middle schooler living in my house) and a sweet 10 year old daughter. We live in Encinitas and enjoy parking ourselves at the beach during the summer. I love good music, snowboarding, singing, and travel as often as I can. I learned to rock climb a few years ago, and have developed a love for the Eastern Sierra Mountains. When I’m not pouring my heart into work and family, you can find me out in nature on a hike, on a beach run, or relaxing with a good book. I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the Black Mountain Middle School team and look forward to a great year!
