"What I Wish My Parents Knew" forums

What I Wish My Parents Knew w/slate from VausMedia on Vimeo.

In the spring of 2012, after the deaths of some Poway High students, a member of the faith community contacted then principal Scott Fisher to see how his network of youth ministers could work with the school to help students and parents make good choices. A committee comprised of two ministers, two high school principals, a parent, and PHS Student Services Coordinator then started meeting to see how the faith community could work together with the schools. With the intention of working with parents to inform them of the deadly affects of drugs/alcohol with our youth, we decided to survey our students to see what they wanted their parents to know.  The result was a surprise to us as drugs/alcohol was only one of six topics that teens overwhelmingly found it difficult to talk to their parents about.  The result of months of planning was "What I Wish My Parents Knew" forums.  Now all five comprehensive high schools are involved and forums are held twice a year, rotating between the high schools.
The next forum will be held at Westview High School on April 6th.
The forum begins with an overview for all participants, and then participants choose a breakout session to attend.  At the April 1st forum, participants will be able to choose from two of the following:
  • Guiding Your Teen Through the Party Years (facilitated by Scott Fisher, former PHS principal and Will Wooton, drug/alcohol counselor with Pacific Treatment Services
  • Depression/Suicide Prevention (facilitated by Traci Barker-Ball, PHS Student Services Coordinator and Stan Collins, consultant with Suicide Prevention Council of SD and CA Statewide Social Marketing Campaign for Suicide Prevention)
  • Guardrails - Creating Boundaries that Actually Work (facilitated by Daryl Nuss, National Network of Youth Ministries Executive Director and Shelley Cowper-Smith, a family therapeutic counselor)
  • Social Media (facilitated by John Ettore, Sr. Pastor, The Gathering Place Church and Jesse Winkler, Sr. Pastor, Westview Church)
  • Academic Pressure (facilitated by Greg Mizel, principal of Del Norte HS, and select members of current juniors and seniors)
