PRINCIPAL’s MESSAGE

Hello Terrapins!

This is Mr. Carlin from Turtleback Elementary School.

A huge thank you to Turtleback’s amazing Foundation and volunteers for the Valentine’s Dance!  It was a terrific community event that was enjoyed by many students and families.  Events such as this take many hours of planning and preparing and we are grateful for all of the support.

This morning we had our first Principal’s Coffee of the year and I appreciate all that attended and provided feedback.  The focus of the Principal’s Coffee is to strengthen our community relations, provide transparency behind practice, and provide resources to support students and families.  Calendar of topics for upcoming coffees coming soon...

In an effort to collect community feedback please complete the short survey below.

Safety Reminder:  Please adhere to all drop off and pick up procedures to help ensure student safety.  Turtleback’s parking lot is a busy place as we welcome over 600 students daily so please walk your children to school whenever possible.  If you are using our drop off circle please make sure students are prepared to exit the vehicle safely and quickly.

Don’t forget there is no school next week for students.  School will resume on Monday, February 24th.

Enjoy the break and hug the ones you love!

The Luckiest Principal in the World,

Adam Carlin
Turtleback Principal

TEN WISE CHOICES

Number Five: Choose quality over quantity.

I choose quality of life over quantity of things like money and possessions.  I know that success is much more than making money.

-Project Wisdom

“Collaboration is a trusting, working relationship between two or more equal participants involved in shared thinking, shared planning and shared creation of integrated instruction.  Through a shared vision and shared objectives, student learning opportunities are created that integrate subject content and information literacy by co-planning, co-implementing, and co-evaluating students’ progress throughout the instructional process in order to improve student learning in all areas of the curriculum.”  IB

WE “LOVED” DANCING WITH YOU!

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION
The first step to enroll a NEW STUDENT in PUSD Preschool is to complete the “Preschool Registration Request” form (For all classes).  “Registration Request” forms for the 2020-2021 will be accepted starting February 1st, 2020.  The form is available and can be completed online at www.powayusd.com/preschool.  Priority enrollment will be February 1 through February 15, 2020.  A lottery process may be required if the requests for a class exceed openings in the class. Parents will be notified by March 15, 2020 about class placements or wait list status.  Registration Request forms received after February 15th will be processed in the order received.  Children must turn 3 by September 2, 2020 to enroll in preschool.

INTEGRATED PRESCHOOL OPPORTUNITY
PUSD is pleased to offer an Integrated Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Preschool Program for the 2020-2021 school year.  The classrooms are located at Deer Canyon and Pomerado Elementary Schools.  The program serves 3 to 5 year olds with and without special needs.  General education developmental curriculum is used and includes large and small group instruction.  Students in the program who are identified as having special needs experience difficulty in one or more of the following areas:  speech and language, social skills and play skills.
Success of the integrated program greatly depends on the inclusion of children without special needs who act as peer models.  The children work as an integrated group by learning and playing together in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding.  Curriculum is play-based and embeds academic concepts into play and social experiences.
Program Details:
Monday—Friday, 5 hours per day
Options:  3 day (Mon, Wed, Fri) and 5 day
Cost:  3-day program is $252 per month
           5-day program is $438. There is a one-time non-refundable $50 registration fee.
Currently, there are openings at both locations for Fall of 2020.  If you are interested in having your child attend this program as a peer model, please contact the Special Education Department at 858-521-2759 or kriesenweber@powayusd.com with the following information to place your child on the list to be screened:

Student first name
Student last name
Gender
Date of Birth
Parent’s Full first and last name(s)
Contact phone number
Email address
Site preference (Pomerado or Deer Canyon Elementary)
3 or 5 day program

You will be contacted to arrange a screening to determine if your child is a match to be a peer model for the integrated program and to provide you with additional information about the program and enrollment process.

NEW DISTRICT PROCEDURE FOR INTRADISTRICT TRANSFER REQUESTS
If you currently have a student at Turtleback with an approved IDT, your IDT is approved through 5th grade and you are not required to do anything further to keep your student at Turtleback.  If your child is currently on an Intradistrict Transfer, his/her siblings do not automatically get into Turtleback. You must apply for a separate Transfer for the sibling (i.e. TK, Kindergarten enrollment for 2020-21) and need to be aware of the new policy regarding Intradistrict Transfer requests.

You must submit a request during the transfer window of February 1 – March 31, 2020, (before enrollment even opens for the 2020-2021 school year). No transfer requests will be accepted outside of this window, and no exceptions will be made. Note: if your student is currently on an Intradistrict Transfer and is moving to the next level (elementary to middle or middle to high school), he/she does not automatically move to the next school with their classmates. You must reapply for an Intradistrict Transfer. Please click the link below for more information and frequently asked questions on transfer requests, as well as upcoming timelines for continuing student registration and new student enrollment. https://powayusd.com/en-US/Departments/Attendance-Discipline/Student-Transfer-Requests/FAQs-for-Residency-Transfers

PROCEDURE FOR FAMILIES THAT MOVE DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
If you should move during the school year, you need to complete a Residency Verification Form and provide two proofs of your new residency to our school office.  If you are no longer living in Turtleback boundaries, your next step is to submit a transfer request to ensure your student’s continued attendance.

•           If you still live within the Poway Unified School District (PUSD) boundaries, please submit an Intradistrict Transfer request by going to the following link:
https://forms.gle/6KLKNCTK3oAwpXJGA

•           If you moved outside the PUSD boundaries, please submit an Interdistrict Transfer Permit. You can find the form here:
https://www.powayusd.com/PUSD/media/LSS/Attendance-Discipline/Interdistrict-Transfer-Application-English.pdf

Your district of residence must sign off on the transfer request prior to bringing/mailing it to the PUSD district office at 15250 Avenue of Science, San Diego, CA 92128.
If you have any questions, please call the Student Attendance and Discipline Office at 858-521-2840.
