PRINCIPAL’s MESSAGE

Hello Terrapins!

This is Mr. Carlin from Turtleback Elementary School.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and support as we welcomed March.  Next week I am excited for our Apex Fun Run!  Our Terrapins have been enjoying the character lessons and experiences provided by our APEX team and I know they can’t wait to get out and run!  Thank you to all of the families that have generously donated.  The donations received for this event will go directly towards improving the social and emotional experiences of each and every Terrapin.  Our goal is to raise sufficient funds to support differentiated opportunities at recess and lunch while enhancing our outdoor spaces on campus for many years to come!

Please be aware that our 2nd grading period came to a close today.  Progress reports will be coming home Friday, March 13th.  Be proud of your young Terrapins and focus on the progress that is being made as they are working hard each and every day.

Tip:  Focus on the process (not the product)!  Outcome is important, process is even more important.  HOW did your child do what he/she did, HOW did he/she achieve their goal?  Teach your child this is just as important, if not more important, than the outcome and mistakes/failure are part of the process.

Please don’t forget to be mindful of our neighbors.  Never block driveways and always use our crosswalk.  If you are volunteering during the day please park across the street and not in the staff parking lot.

Please continue to check our website and calendar frequently.  Have a wonderful weekend and hug the ones you love!

The luckiest principal in the world,

Adam Foster Carlin
Turtleback Principal

CONTINUING STUDENT SURVEY
We are starting the enrollment process for the 2020-2021 school year.  Your child’s teacher has sent home a survey asking if your student will be returning to Turtleback next year.   Please mark the form according to your plans for next year and return to the teacher by Friday March 13th.  It is extremely important that all parents and guardians complete the survey to ensure that your child is included in our enrollment numbers for the 2020/21 school year and to ensure your student will have a seat at Turtleback next year.  Continuing registration for our continuing students will be done on line this year in April - details to follow in a separate email.   If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 858-673-5514.

APEX: LET’S CHANGE THE FUTURE!
Next Wednesday, March 11th is the APEX Fun Run! Earlier this week, Super Fly Ty and his team came for the pep rally and introduced the kids to this year’s theme: GAME ON – Go Getter, Appreciate, Move Forward, Explore, Others First, and Now What! Each day, students get an important character lessons that make them a game changing leader! In addition to these lessons, Terrapins are learning about the importance of exercise. And, while doing all that, they’re raising money for the school!
If you haven’t already, please login to the APEX website (you’ll need to enter your child’s unique access code, which can be found on their lanyard), select your student’s shirt size and make a pledge. Last year, this event raised over $20,000 for Turtleback! And, with your support, this year we hope to raise even more to help fund the quality of our student’s outdoor experiences, support social and emotional needs, campus beautification, classroom supplies, and other school needs. You can also make your donation on the Turtleback Education Foundation website and your student will still receive credit.

LOST AND FOUND
Our Lost and Found cart is once again overflowing.  Please look for any of your student’s missing coats, water bottles or lunch boxes at your earliest convenience.  All items not claimed will be donated to charity on Friday April 10th

NEW DISTRICT PROCEDURE FOR INTRADISTRICT TRANSFER REQUESTS
If you currently have a student at Turtleback with an approved IDT, your IDT is approved through 5th grade and you are not required to do anything further to keep your student at Turtleback.  If your child is currently on an Intradistrict Transfer, his/her siblings do not automatically get into Turtleback. You must apply for a separate Transfer for the sibling (i.e. TK, Kindergarten enrollment for 2020-21) and need to be aware of the new policy regarding Intradistrict Transfer requests.

You must submit a request during the transfer window of February 1 – March 31, 2020, (before enrollment even opens for the 2020-2021 school year). No transfer requests will be accepted outside of this window, and no exceptions will be made. Note: if your student is currently on an Intradistrict Transfer and is moving to the next level (elementary to middle or middle to high school), he/she does not automatically move to the next school with their classmates. You must reapply for an Intradistrict Transfer. Please click the link below for more information and frequently asked questions on transfer requests, as well as upcoming timelines for continuing student registration and new student enrollment. https://powayusd.com/en-US/Departments/Attendance-Discipline/Student-Transfer-Requests/FAQs-for-Residency-Transfers

PROCEDURE FOR FAMILIES THAT MOVE DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
If you should move during the school year, you need to complete a Residency Verification Form and provide two proofs of your new residency to our school office.  If you are no longer living in Turtleback boundaries, your next step is to submit a transfer request to ensure your student’s continued attendance.

•           If you still live within the Poway Unified School District (PUSD) boundaries, please submit an Intradistrict Transfer request by going to the following link:
https://forms.gle/6KLKNCTK3oAwpXJGA

•           If you moved outside the PUSD boundaries, please submit an Interdistrict Transfer Permit. You can find the form here:
https://www.powayusd.com/PUSD/media/LSS/Attendance-Discipline/Interdistrict-Transfer-Application-English.pdf

Your district of residence must sign off on the transfer request prior to bringing/mailing it to the PUSD district office at 15250 Avenue of Science, San Diego, CA 92128.
If you have any questions, please call the Student Attendance and Discipline Office at 858-521-2840.
