Communication sent out by our Director, Barbara Scholl:
Dear ESS Families:
We hope your family is well and our staff sends their best wishes to you and yours! We miss your children and hope that our time in our homes will prevent the spread of this virus.
Our communication today is regarding the tuition that you have paid for the month of March and tuition which continues throughout the school year. You will be receiving a prorated credit to your ESS account for 50% of the tuition covering the month of March, due to the fact that students attended March 1- March 13. This will show on your next invoice as a credit for future months. In addition, we will not bill for the month of April or moving forward until school starts again. We will also hold any of your automatic payments until school resumes. This prorated credit will begin to be processed March 26th. We have 6500 student accounts; therefore, this could take our small team some time to accomplish.
As you may know, our tuition-based programs in PUSD are funded by the tuition our families pay. We do not utilize any State tax funding, District money or any other sources for funding to support the ESS fee-based program. We are proud of the fact that we are able to keep the costs low for ESS because we are a cost neutral, non-profit program. However, operating as a cost-neutral program creates challenges during an emergency such as COVID-19. We are committed to paying our contracted employees during this time that schools are closed. Even though we have been conservative and have a small reserve, we don’t know how long the school closure will last. Due to the fact that there are no additional funding streams for our program besides tuition, maintaining salaries is dependent on these funds. Therefore, we will be providing an option below for families to voluntarily donate their prorated credit to support the ESS program staff. We know this could be an additional hardship for some so please know, this is an optional donation.
To voluntarily opt out of the ESS credit, allowing ESS to keep your funding to pay for ESS staff, please complete this survey by clicking HERE
, or you could email a note back to me indicating this information. Please complete the survey by Wednesday, March 25, 2020.
We are very grateful for those who might be able to donate. Please understand that your child’s ESS enrollment will be kept in active status during this school shut-down so that we can start back up again as soon as this closure is complete.
Thank you for your patience as we navigate these uncharted waters. We are grateful that you have trusted us with your children and we look forward to seeing you soon!
If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Scholl at firstname.lastname@example.org
Director, Extended Students Services & Preschool
Poway Unified School District
Mission Statement - "E.S.S. is a bridge between school and home where children are encouraged to learn, create, and explore within their school, community, and world."
Program Overview - This extended-day program expands the excellence of each child's school experience into before and after school. E.S.S. is staffed by highly qualified professionals and trained program assistants. The staff provides for the academic and social needs of children in safe and nurturing environments. There is time, space, encouragement, and support for learning good study habits.
Voluntary Use Program - ESS is a voluntary use program. All PUSD elementary schools have an Extended Student Services program on their campus. Our organization works diligently to accommodate and serve working families in need of before and after school care. A student's enrollment at an elementary school does not guarantee them ESS enrollment. As a growing organization, each ESS site may experience limitations that factor into the enrollment capacity and may prohibit the acceptance of additional students at any given time.
Program History - The E.S.S. program began in 1980 and is now offered in every elementary school in the Poway Unified School District. All children who attend elementary school in the District are eligible to enroll.
Program Activities - Our program is geared toward expanding each child's world through arts & crafts projects, science activities, reading and language arts reinforcement, and math concept development. Our program reinforces the social, motor, and academic skills children learn in the classroom.
Hours - E.S.S. is open daily, Monday - Friday, from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm.
E.S.S. Embraces ENRICH, an acronym to include the following areas of enrichment, to use as a Guide for Staff Planning:
E xercise mind & body
R eading & Relationships
I nvestigating Interests
C haracter Counts!, Creative Thinking, & the Arts
H aving Fun!
We believe that the children's extended day will be enriched by providing a balanced activity calendar that will support their growth and development. We want to encourage the children to explore their interests, motivate them to achieve their personal best, and relax and have fun with friends.
