Volunteer Information

PUSD Volunteer Process

The Poway Unified School District thanks you for your dedication and diligence in the work you do for our schools. We love our volunteers because they contribute so much time and energy to our students and staff. Our schools would not be what they are without you.

  • Are you a RETIREE?  Click here for more information about how Retirees can become involved.
  •  There are two types of volunteers:
    • Level 1 – This is the most common type of volunteer. Level I volunteers are allowed to work with students under the supervision of staff. Level I volunteers are not allowed to be left alone with students.
    • Level 2 – For volunteers who will work in isolation with students, e.g., Safety Patrol Coordinator, Robotics Coaches, Volunteer Band Instructors.  Level II volunteers will have significant unsupervised contact with students.

Each Volunteer type must be approved annually by the school and District.

For Level II volunteers, please note that since this allows for “significant unsupervised contact with students”  there are additional requirements that need to be completed.

Steps to be a Level I volunteer requires completion of the following:

  1. Complete the following forms
    1. Level I Application  (Megan’s Law)
    2. Volunteer Code of Conduct
    3. Volunteer Code of Confidentiality
    4. Proof of identification/driver’s license [proof of identification/driver’s license to be shown at school site]
  2. Applicants will turn in completed forms plus proof of a TB clearance to the school site where they plan to volunteer. TB Testing requirements can be found in the section below titled “TB Testing”. TB tests must be kept current to continue volunteering.
  3. The school site will then notify you once your application is approved.

Steps to be a Level II volunteer:

  1. Complete the following forms
    1. Level I Application  (Megan’s Law)
    2. Volunteer Code of Conduct
    3. Volunteer Code of Confidentiality
    4. Proof of identification/driver’s license [proof of identification/driver’s license to be shown at school site]
  2. Applicant will turn in completed forms plus proof of a TB clearance to the school site where they plan to volunteer. TB Testing requirements can be found in the section below titled “TB Testing”. TB tests must be kept current to continue volunteering.
  3. Submit a Level 2 Approval form from the school site. The form must be signed by the school site and then brought to the District Office on:
    •  Tuesday 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
    •  Thursday 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  4. Please be prepared to show a picture ID when you pick up the form.
  5. This form will be exchanged for an application and Livescan Fingerprinting Form. Please be prepared to show picture ID when you pick up the form.
    1. Livescan runs fingerprints through databases of the CA DOJ (CA Department of Justice) and FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations). There is a $20 cost for the applicant. This is a mandatory requirement for Level II volunteers.
  6. The school site will notify applicant once they are approved.

Volunteer Reminders

  1. Individuals will not be allowed to volunteer until notified by the school site that they are cleared to begin.
  2. When you come to volunteer, please sign in and out. All volunteers at each of our school sites are required to sign in at the office and put on a name tag. You must do this each day you volunteer. This helps us identify people on our campus and helps keep our kids safe. Thank you for remembering to do this!
  3. For private vehicle transportation for students, you will need to fill out and return this form before the trip:  Private Vehicle Transportation for Student's off-site Student Experience .
  4. If you are feeling ill or have any symptoms related to cold, flu or COVID-19, please do not volunteer.

  Retirees:

Seniors Helping Our Kids (SHOK) is an all-volunteer organization that trains and places nearly 200 retirees a year in PUSD schools. Most serve as one-on-one reading tutors for children in grade 1-3, following the OASIS Tutoring program. Others are classroom or library helpers. If you are a retiree and interested in this opportunity, check out Seniors Helping Our Kids. They will help you get all the paperwork together to participate as a volunteer.

  TB Testing

Due to new regulations from both the state and county, PUSD nurses will no longer be providing TB clearance. If you are due for your screening (once every four years), we are hoping this advance notification will give you ample time over the summer to comply, before the start of the new school year.

The law requires that TB clearance (TB skin test or TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire) be completed by a licensed health care provider.

Here are a few nearby resources where you can obtain TB clearance. There may be a fee or co-pay involved at some locations:

  •    Your primary health care provider
  •    CVS Minute Clinic, 16773 Bernardo Center Dr., Rancho Bernardo, CA 92128 or,
  •    CVS Minute Clinic, 12358 Poway Rd., Poway, CA 92064
  •    Walgreen Clinic, 13390 Poway Rd., Poway, CA 92064
  •    Neighborhood Health Clinic, 460 N. Elm St., Escondido, CA 92025, 760-520-8100, Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 1:00-4:00, Wednesday: 2:30-4:00
  •   Public Health Center, 649 West Mission Ave, Suite 2, Escondido, CA 92025, 619-692-5565

Proof of TB clearance is mandated for volunteers working in public schools. Please submit written TB clearance signed by your health care provider to your school site.

Thank you for your willingness to volunteer and for your support of our school!
