Attendance "Do"
DO have your student speak with their teacher if they think they were marked absent or tardy in error.
DO call or email the attendance office hotline each and every day, before 11:00 a.m., that your student is absent from school. TWELVE absences are considered excessive, unless a doctor's note on official letterhead with the student's name and date of absences is provided. The attendance office hotline is accessible to voice mail 24 hours a day.
DO be specific when reporting an absence “for example, illness, doctor, dental, court, funeral (please give relationship of deceased to the student and the state where the funeral is being held“ sorry, but this is required by the state for funding purposes), personal business, etc. If you do not give a reason we will assume it is personal.
DO call if the student is going to be late and remind them to check in at the attendance office windows if they arrive more that 15 minutes late, even if it is between classes or at break or at lunch time. The seriousness of tardiness is recognized in the State Education Code and can result in removal from class with loss of credit or suspension from school. FIVE tardies are considered excessive and may result in disciplinary action unless a doctor's note on official letterhead with the student's name and date of absences is provided.
DO try to schedule appointments after school hours. Students arriving late to class or leaving class early disrupt the classroom. If your student must leave campus early, call the night before or as early in the day as possible to let us know so that the student can pick up their off campus pass before going to class. It is the STUDENT'S responsibility to pick up their off campus pass at the attendance office windows before school, at break or at lunch, we do not interrupt the classrooms to deliver the passes! If a student leaves campus without a pass, it is considered a truancy and cannot be excused by a parent/guardian. Be sure to include the student's name, grade, what time they need to be released, why they are leaving, if they will return to school, your name and relationship to the student and a number where you can be reached during the day. If you cannot call and choose to come to the office to pick up your student, allow plenty of time for us to get the student out of class. Classes are not always in the assigned classrooms, or if the student is in a P.E. class he/she will need time to change clothing. It is always best to call first.

Attendance "Don't"

DON'T request an off campus pass for your student to leave during lunch time. Rancho Bernardo High School has a closed campus, only seniors with a lunch pass are allowed to leave at lunch. If your student MUST leave during the lunch time, a parent must come to the attendance office to pick the student up.

DON'T forget to speak directly into the mouthpiece of the phone as clearly and slowly as possible. It is helpful if you spell the student's first and last names. Due to assorted background noises, it is sometimes very difficult to determine which student is being reported absent.

DON'T lose your patience. Rancho Bernardo High School has an enrollment of approximately 2,500 students. The attendance office is staffed by only 2 employees. We try to assist everyone in as timely a manner as we possibly can, but students always come first!

DON'T be out of class without a hall pass! If you come to the office without a hall pass, you will be sent back to class to get one.

24-Hour Attendance Hotline:

858-485-4845 or 858-485-4840 for absence, tardy or off-campus passes

rbhsattendance@powayusd.com    (No off-campus passes via email)
You must use email that is on file at PUSD.  Email may only be read at the end of the day so off-campus passes must be phoned in.

Compulsory attendance laws require that parents send their children to school.  The law further states that a student must attend every scheduled session of every class, even if failure is imminent.  The law applies to all students until they reach 18 years old.  Once a student becomes 18 years old, they become a guest at Rancho Bernardo and can be withdrawn from school if their academic progress, attendance, or behavior is not acceptable.

Tardy or Absence

If your child is going to be tardy or absent from school or you need to clear an absence, please contact the attendance 24-Hour hotline: 858-485-4845 or 858-485-4840 or email rbhsattendance@powayusd.com from the email address you have on file at Poway Unified School District.  Email may only be read at the end of the day so off-campus passes must be phoned in.

Off-Campus Passes

Students who need to leave campus during class time must be excused by a parent or guardian prior to the time the student is released. Contact the Attendance Office the day before the pass is needed or by 7:00am by phone only. All calls received after 7:00am can take up to 4 hours to process.  It is the students' responsibility to pick up the off-campus pass at the attendance window (before school, during break, or lunch), we do not interrupt the classroom by delivering passes. Leaving campus without a pass will result in truancy.

The following information is required, please speak clearly and be aware that cell phone coverage and road/background noise may obscure your information:

  • Student's Name (spell last name):
  • Your Name:
  • Relationship to the student:
  • Time student is to be released:
  • When student will return:
  • Reason:

Students may access the Attendance Office before school, during student break, lunch and after school.

TWO TIMES A STUDENT MUST REPORT TO THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE

  1. ARRIVING MORE THAT 15 MINUTES LATE TO SCHOOL
  2. LEAVING BEFORE THE END OF THE STUDENT'S LAST CLASS

Clearing Absences

A parent/guardian must CALL the Attendance Office within 48 hours of the absence to excuse the absence.

When calling in to excuse your student, please provide student's full name (spell the last name) and grade, date of absence, time of absence (all day, or specific times), reason for absence, your name and relationship to student, and a contact number.

Absences will be marked as truancies if not excused within 72 hours.

Truants/class cuts

Students who miss an entire day of school without bring excused by their parent/guardian within 48 hours are considered truant from school and are subject to disciplinary action. If a teacher fails to show up on time, students are to remain by the door until the teacher or administrator arrives. Students who fail to do so will be considered truant from class. Period truancy will be handled through discipline at the school level, including, but not limited to, detention, campus beautification or loss of privileges.

Arriving Late to School

Any student arriving more than 15 minutes late to school must check in at the Attendance Office.  If you arrive during the first 15 minutes of your day proceed directly to your class.

Tardy Policy

Students are expected to be in class on time. If the student arrives late for the 5th time (excused or unexcused), the teacher may refer the student to the Administrator, and the student will be required to fulfill lunch detention and/or campus beautification.

Teacher Hall Pass

Student must have a written office pass signed by a school official to be out of class.

SARB (Student Attendance Review Board)

Parents or guardians must comply with California Education Code requiring students under 18 years of age to attend school daily. Parents or guardians who fail to meet this obligation may be guilty of an infraction and subject to legal action pursuant to Article 6 of Chapter II of Part 27 of The Education Code.

Twelve excused absences are considered excessive and a Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) letter will be sent to the district office, unless the student brings in a doctor's note for the absence. Subsequent absences will result in issuance of additional letters.

Students who are truant from school on three (3) different days will have a first truancy letter sent home and a copy sent to the Student Attendance and Discipline Office. Subsequent truant days will result in the issuance of a second and third letter. After three letters of truancy or three letters excessive excused absences have been sent, a SARB court hearing will be scheduled for parents and student to attend.

OCIS (Off Campus Independent Study)

Because of our accelerated schedule we do not recommend that students miss school. However we do acknowledge that there will be instances where students will need to be absent for extended periods. RBHS will only be doing OCIS contracts for 10 days or more.

Your student can pick up the OCIS Master Agreement at the front office Reception desk. We need to receive the completed and signed paperwork seven working days before the student leaves.

Any time your student is out of school please send and email to rbhsattendance@powayusd.com to let the Attendance Office know the student's name and the dates of the absence.

As per district policy students have the right to receive and complete work so that they will not get behind in their coursework. Please have your student speak to their teachers about assignments the teacher may have available.
