Important Reminders and Upcoming Events 6/2/17

DISMISSAL TIME ON LAST DAY OF SCHOOL IS 1:10 PM
Sunset Hills will be dismissing at 1:10 on Thursday, June 8th, the last day of school.

PARKING LOT
The parking lot will be busy the last week of school.  We have 5th grade promotion on Wednesday, June 7th at 9:00 am and Black Mountain Middle School has 8th grade promotion on Thursday, June 8th at 9:00 am.  Please give yourself extra time to get to school those days as the traffic will be heavy and the parking lot full.  We will be opening up the blacktop after 8:30 am to help alleviate the parking on the 7th and 8th

5TH GRADE STUDENTS VS STAFF KICKBALL GAME
The 5th grade students will play a game of kickball against the staff on the last day of school, June 8th.  The game will start at 9:00 am on the fields.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Kat Hernandez is the Volunteer of the Month for May.  Kat volunteers countless hours at Sunset Hills.  She is the Sock Hop Chair and Staff Appreciation Chair.  She is also the room parent for her students and volunteers at all events.  Thank you for all you do Kat!

SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS
The office will be closed from June 26th through August 4th.  Beginning August 7th, the office will be open daily from 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.

REFLECTIONS ART CONTEST
Do you think that visual and performing arts are an important part of education? Reflections is a PTA program that celebrates literature, film production, music composition, dance choreography, visual arts, and photography.  Next school year's theme is “Within Reach”.   Email Joyce Medina drjbmedina@gmail.com or Krisha Benavides always.krisha.b@gmail.com for more details.

BOX TOPS
We are close to the end of the year. Please make sure to turn in any remaining box tops to your child's teacher or to the big yellow box in the front office. Also, don't forget to save them over the summer. There will be new class contests starting in the fall, but only non-expired box tops will earn the class points.

 READING GARDEN
Do you know a professional green thumb who is willing to donate their time?  We need a landscape designer, someone to install irrigation and someone to haul dirt and plants.  The vision for the reading garden is a covered space with benches and artificial turf surrounded by trees and indigenous plants.   Also included will be a place where students can do curriculum based labs and have learning opportunities.   Contact Michelle Testa at mtesta@powayusd.com or call/text 858-722-4169.

NEW STUDENT ENROLLMENT ONGOING
New student enrollment is ongoing in the office.  Please be sure to bring the following ORIGINAL documents with you upon enrollment:
Original Birth Certificate, Current Passport or Baptismal Certificate (TK-12). As required by State law, all children entering Kindergarten must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2017.  If your child's birthday is between September 2, 2017 and December 2, 2017, they will be enrolled in Transitional Kindergarten.

SAFETY MESSAGE
With the warm weather, snakes could be coming out of hibernation and these creatures will bite if provoked.  We remind our students to stay away from the bushes and shrubs.  Please also remind your students who are walking on Oviedo Street to stay clear of the shrubs as this can be a good hiding place.

REMIND
Have you ever come to school and realized that you had forgotten that it was a school spirit day? Would you like to be reminded when there is an event happening at school? There is an app that allows Principal Ziegler to send out texts when there is a change in schedule, reminders or emergencies.  All you have to do is “Opt” in by sending a message to (434) 473-7316.  In the message box, type @allshe.  Follow the text prompt and you will start receiving messages.  Standard text message rates apply.
