Principal's Start of School Message

 Dear Families of Deer Canyon,

 The start of school is just around the corner! I hope you have enjoyed a fun filled summer and are ready for a wonderful school year. Knowing the busy days ahead, highlighted below are some important start of school activities and events. Stay up to date throughout the year by visiting our website www.deercanyon.org. The Google Calendar will keep you apprised of school, PTA and Foundation activities. Please review and plan accordingly. We have an exciting year ahead!
  •  August 12th, 4:00pm – 4:30pm. Connect Ed Messages for Class Placement. Listen for your phone to ring and email to “ding”! Your NEW classroom teacher will be calling and emailing with a special welcome message for you regarding your class assignment for the coming year.
  •  August 15th, 2:00 – 2:30pm (last names A-L) and 2:30 - 3:00pm (last names M-Z). Transitional Kinder (TK) and Kinder Meet and Greet. TKs and Kindergartners and their parents are invited to meet their new teacher in their TK/Kindergarten classrooms and enjoy cookies and juice, making the start of school on Tuesday, August 16th a more comfortable experience.  This is informal and no presentation will be made. 
  •  August 15th, 3:00 – 4:00pm Campus Tours for New DCES Families. Our knowledgeable 5th grade students will be providing informal campus tours for families new to Deer Canyon. Join us to learn about our school.
  •  August 15th, 4pm, Blacktop - PTA Popsicle Party. All are welcome to attend.
  •  August 16th, 7:40am – School begins for ALL ASD Preschool – 5th grade students.
  •  August 16th, 11:30am – TK & Kinder Dismissed
  •  August 16th, 2:00pm – 1st – 5th Grades Dismissed
  •  August 18th, 8:00am, MPR – PTA Meeting. All are welcome to attend.
  •  August 25th, 5:45pm (grades 3-5), 6:45pm (grades TK-2) – Back To School Night
  •  September 2nd, 9:00am - First Friday
  • September 5th, Labor Day Holiday - NO School
  •  September 16th, Regular Lunch Schedule – Parents’ Picnic. Join your child for lunch!

BEFORE SCHOOL SUPERVISION
Children in grades 1 - 5 should arrive on the playground no earlier than 7:25 a.m., the time that supervision begins.  Transitional Kindergarteners and Kindergartners should arrive close to 7:40 a.m. when they enter their classrooms.

iPADS ON CAMPUS
Children bringing iPads to school are to report directly to their classrooms in the morning. iPads may not be brought to the playground or lunch areas before or after school and must be stored in students’ classrooms. iPads brought from home must have a protective case and be charged.Students in grades 1-5 may begin bringing iPads from home on Monday, August 29, 2016.  Students in grades TK and K maybegin bringing iPads from home on Monday, September 26, 2016.

CLOSED CAMPUS
Deer Canyon is a closed campus.  Once children arrive, they may not leave unless a parent or other authorized person comes to the office to sign a release.  To insure the safety of our children, you will be required to show I.D. when you pick up your student.

SCHOOL LUNCH
The cafeteria lunch, including milk, will be $3.00 this year.  Milk or juice can be purchased separately.  Please prepay for lunch whenever possible.  Payments may be made on-line athttps://www.myschoolbucks.com.  Checks should be made out to PUSD Food & Nutrition.  If a student forgets to bring lunch/lunch money, he or she will be allowed to call home.  If you qualify for free or reduced price lunch, please fill out the application which is available online or in the school office. MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
If your child is on medication, a “Physician’s Recommendation for Medication” form must be obtained from the school office, completed by your physician, and returned to school.  NO MEDICATION WILL BE GIVEN AT SCHOOL WITHOUT THIS FORM.  An adult must bring the medication to the school office.  Children may at NO TIME have medication in their possession. This includes aspirin, inhalers, cough drops, etc.

BICYCLE RIDING
Riding a bicycle is limited to children in grades 3rd – 5th.  Each child must wear a helmet and provide a lock for his/her bike.  Students riding a bike to school must have a permission slip on file in the office.  Skateboards and rollerblades are not allowed on campus.

ABSENCES
State law requires that pupil attendance be verified.  If your child will be absent, please call the school ABSENCE HOTLINE at 484-4876.  If the school is not notified regarding an absence by 10:00 a.m., we will call you at home or at work for verification. Please do not email the school regarding student absences. All attendance information should be conveyed through the Attendance Hotline.
